The Ohio Attorney General’s Office provides a three-hour Sunshine Laws Training, free of charge, for public officials, their designees, public employees, and members of the general public.
Ohio Revised Code Section 109.43(B) provides that:
The attorney general shall develop, provide, and certify training programs and seminars for all elected officials or their appropriate designees, and for all future officials who choose to satisfy the training requirement before taking office, in order to enhance the officials’ knowledge of the duty to provide access to public records as required by section 149.43 of the Revised Code and to enhance their knowledge of the open meetings laws set forth in section 121.22 of the Revised Code. The training shall be three hours for every term of office for which the elected official or future official was appointed or elected to the public office involved.
Completing either the on-demand or live training session satisfies the training requirement of R.C. 149.43.
Important Information:
- Registration Required. No credit will be given to individuals that were not registered, even if they attended the entire live training using another's computer. The Office would have no records of attendance.
- Attendance Tracking. The live training platform logs when participants join and leave the live training session.
- Designee Registration. Designees must identify the official(s) they represent when registering.
- CLE Credit. Attorneys seeking CLE credit must include their number when registering. The training is approved for three hours of credit.
Attendance records are posted online at Sunshine Laws Training Attendance Reports. They are posted shortly after the training is completed.
