Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony approaches

Law enforcement officers from across Ohio will gather at 11 a.m. May 2 to honor three of their peers who lost their lives in 2012. The 26th annual Ohio Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony will take place at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy in London.

This year’s honorees are:
  • Officer Frank D. Mancini of the Akron Police Department, who died Jan. 23, 2012, from complications resulting from a gunshot wound suffered in 1965
  • Officer Jason Gresko of the Willoughby Police Department, who died Sept. 21, 2012, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident while responding to an emergency call
  • Officer Marcia Figueroa of the Cleveland Police Department, who died Nov. 4, 2012, from a medical emergency while providing security during a presidential campaign event
In addition to the peace officers lost last year, memorial ceremony attendees will honor three individuals who died in the line of duty in years past. The officers were nominated for recognition following research by their departments.
 
The historical inductees are:
  • Officer Owen O. Grandstaff of the Bluffton Police Department, who died March  26, 1927, from a heart attack during a foot pursuit
  • Officer Frank Herrmann of the Bluffton Police Department, who died Sept. 5, 1929, after being struck by a vehicle he attempted to stop for speeding
  • Officer Harold L. Wintrow of the Akron Police Department, who died Aug. 27, 1993, from complications resulting from a gunshot wound suffered in 1965
Law enforcement agencies throughout Ohio are invited to participate in the Fraternal Order of Police Memorial Motorcade, which will travel from downtown Columbus to London on the morning of the ceremony.
 
The motorcade will depart at 10 a.m. from the FOP State Lodge, 222 E. Town St., Columbus. Units should assemble at 8:30 a.m. To participate in the motorcade, contact Denise Young with the FOP at 800-367-6524 by April 30.
