Conference stresses crime victims’ access to justice

4/23/2014
The Attorney General’s Two Days in May Conference on Victim Assistance offers Ohio’s victim advocates and others in the criminal justice community a variety of unique and compelling professional development opportunities. Registration is now open for the conference, scheduled for May 12–13 at the Hyatt Regency Columbus.

This year’s theme, Access to Justice for Victims of Crime, conveys the fact that many organizations and service providers assist victims in Ohio while also stressing that many people in need may not be aware of these services. The conference’s speakers and workshops will emphasize efforts to reach all victims and encourage them to engage with services that can help them heal.

Here’s a look at conference highlights:
  • Attorney General Mike DeWine will open the conference at a morning session shared with Franklin County Municipal Court Judge Paul Herbert, who founded the CATCH Court for human trafficking victims, and Barbara Freeman, one of the program’s first graduates.
  • That day’s luncheon speaker is Veronique Valliere, a psychologist with more than 20 years’ experience directing and supervising programs that deal with violence, abuse, trauma, and criminality. She has treated many violent offenders and their victims.
  • The plenary session speaker the following morning is Phil Chalmers, an authority on juvenile homicide and mass murder.
  • Leading experts in victim advocacy will conduct 35 workshops on such topics as the use of journaling to advance healing and how to improve communications between victim advocates and law enforcement.
