Statistically Speaking

4/19/2011

Sheriffs are responsible for issuing, renewing, denying, suspending, and revoking Ohioans’ concealed carry licenses. They report these statistics quarterly to the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission, part of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. The office recently issued the 2010 annual report related to the state’s concealed handgun law. Here are some highlights:

Ohio sheriffs issued 60,881 regular concealed carry permits in 2010, including 47,337 new licenses and 13,544 renewal licenses.

The figure is down from 73,334 regular permits issued in 2009, the most active year since the state’s concealed carry law took effect in 2004.

Other statistics from 2010 included:

720 licenses were suspended,
206 permits were revoked,

and 655 applications were denied.

The first renewal period under Ohio’s concealed handgun law began in 2008 for individuals who were issued permits in 2004. Since then, 61,506 permit holders have renewed their licenses.

Every 5 years permit holders who wish to retain licenses must renew them.

Ohio has reciprocity agreements with 20 states, allowing Ohioans with permits here to carry weapons in these jurisdictions (and vice versa): Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
