Domestic violence is devastating to the victim, family, and community. The Ohio Attorney General's Office works hard to shine a light on this problem and help those who are victims.
One way anyone can show their awareness of domestic violence is to incorporate purple, the official color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, into their lives during October. This can be done by wearing some type of purple clothing during the month. Another opportunity to show awareness is to use a purple light bulb for a home’s porch light.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Office makes available a variety of educational resources in October and throughout the year designed to help prevent domestic violence and assist victims.
On Oct. 11, the Crime Victim Section of the Attorney General’s Office is partnering with the Ohio Domestic Violence Network for a workshop, Short Changed: Economics and Abuse. It’s designed for victim advocates to help them understand the less obvious but very damaging effects of the economic abuse aspect of domestic violence.
Cut It Out is a program for cosmetology professionals. It helps them in recognizing the warning signs of domestic violence that they may see with some of their clients. Throughout October, Cut It Out training will be given to cosmetology students of Regency Institutes and at a session at the Piqua YWCA.
The Crime Victim Section also administers compensation to victims of crime, such as domestic violence. Eligible victims can be compensated for such costs as medical expenses, wages lost because of the crime, and counseling for immediate family members.
