Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy

The Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy houses both Commission and Academy staff. Commission staff oversees training requirements and curriculum for peace officers, private security, local corrections, jail personnel, K-9 units, and humane agents, in addition to firearms programs for public defender investigators, bailiffs, probation officers, and parole officers. They also oversee certification standards of peace officers. Academy staff provides instruction in basic, advanced, and technical subjects for the Ohio law enforcement community using the latest research and recommended professional practices.

CALEA Accreditation

OPOTA is nationally accredited by the Commmission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

“The purpose of this public comment portal is to receive comments regarding an agency's compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide the participating agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.”

IMPORTANT: CALEA is not an investigatory body and subsequently the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes. Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgment of submissions; however, the information will be considered in context to its relevancy to compliance with standards and the tenets of CALEA® Accreditation.

Courses

OPOTA courses provided at the London main academy, the Tactical Training Center and regionally around the state are available for registration.  New courses are added as developed so check back frequently for the latest in new offerings.  You can also log on to OPOTA Portal to view the course catalog and conveniently register online.

Be advised that the dorms and cafeteria are closed at the London campus.  Lodging at the Government rate is available at hotels in the London, Springfield and Hilliard areas.

Except for occasional use as a regional training site, the Richfield campus is permanently closed.

All course registration and payments, whether self-pay or agency pay, should be made via the OPOTA Portal.

If you need to make a payment unrelated to course registration (site use, certificate reissue, private security, other), please utilize the OPOTA Non-Course Payment site.
