(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Attorney General Dave Yost announced today that Ohio will receive more than $370,000 from an air pollution settlement with ArcelorMittal, the owner of a steel mill in Cleveland.
“Protecting the air we breathe isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s a matter of public health,” Yost said. “Cutting back on air pollution is a win-win for the planet and our lungs.”
The agreement approved by a federal judge on Wednesday settles allegations that the steel manufacturer violated the Clean Air Act at the Cleveland mill and three other facilities in Indiana. The company has agreed to pay $371,859 to Ohio, $2 million to Indiana and $2.6 million to the U.S. government.
Ohio’s portion of the settlement stems from allegations that ArcelorMittal exceed permitted air pollution limits at the Cleveland mill on several occasions from 2007 through 2018. According to the settlement, the facility has implemented Clean Air Act compliance programs and projects to enhance emission controls, inspections, repairs and preventative maintenance.
Attorneys from Yost’s Environmental Enforcement Section represented the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency in the case.
