This course is dedicated to providing students with knowledge and skills necessary for teaching others the successful termination of a vehicle pursuit. Students will receive classroom and practical hands-on training in the use of Precision Immobilization Techniques (PIT), tire deflation devices, pursuit intervention techniques, channeling, and moving/stationary roadblocks from the perspective of a trainer. Legal and liability issues will be addressed. Specially equipped OPOTA training vehicles will be used. Students will be required to act as instructors during a Pursuit Termination Techniques course scheduled the last two days of this program. Evening exercises may be scheduled along with extended day instruction.
Prerequisite: It is required that attendees complete a two-day Pursuit Termination Techniques course or be a certified Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor prior to enrollment.
Note: Students should bring foul weather gear. This course requires that students engage in moderate physical activity to include but not limited to brief running, lifting and throwing. It is recommended that students are proficient drivers prior to enrollment and are in good physical condition. Student instructors must dress appropriately as instructors during days two and three of the course. Slacks, BDU-style trousers and polo-type shirts are recommended. Helmets will be provided; however, students may bring their own DOT-certified helmet if desired.
