Stalking: Tracking the Creeper

Stalking is a crime, defined by its negative impact on the victim and predominantly committed by individuals known to them. Unique from most crimes due to its ongoing nature comprised of mostly legal behavior, stalking takes an emotional and physical toll on victims, making investigation even more involved. The presenters will profile cases and walk participants through the process of pulling together each incident to create a bigger picture of intimidation, coercion, and fear. Participants will leave with information on the various types of stalking and investigative tactics, evidence preservation and documentation, safety planning, effectively prosecuting from a victim-centered perspective, and the benefits of a multidisciplinary response.

Objectives:

  • Participants will gain a general knowledge of stalking and an increased awareness in cases involving stalking and associated criminal acts.
  • Participants will know the legal definition of stalking and what courts have found constitute the crime.
  • Participants will understand the steps to evidence preservation and collection.
  • Participants will know ways to improve investigation and documentation of stalking cases.
  • Participants will learn how to conduct situational safety plans with victims of stalking, incorporating plans for Home, Transit, Work, Court, On-line, and Visitation/Exchange.
  • Each participant will gain hands-on experience evaluating a model location and situation for stalking elements.
This training is for all disciplines, including prosecutors, law enforcement, advocates, probation officers, and community service providers.
