Matt joined the Charitable Law Section of the Ohio Attorney General's Office as the assistant section chief in 2019. Previously, Matt supervised the criminal unit of the Environmental Enforcement Section, which investigates and prosecutes environmental criminal cases referred by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Department of Agriculture, Ohio Department of Health, and local law enforcement authorities throughout the state. Matt has also represented the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency in civil and administrative litigation to enforce the Federal Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and Ohio's statutes and regulations aimed at preventing water pollution.

Before joining the attorney general's office, Matt served on active duty in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps from 2010 to 2017, gaining extensive litigation experience at both the trial and appellate levels. From 2015 to 2017, Matt was an appellate defense counsel at the Army Defense Appellate Division in the National Capital Region, where he filed briefs and presented oral argument at the highest courts in the military. Matt was previously a trial counsel and special assistant U.S. attorney at Fort Knox, Kentucky, serving as lead prosecutor in numerous felony jury trials. In 2014, he deployed to Afghanistan for nine months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as general counsel to a brigadier general. Matt continues to serve as a Major in the Army Reserve and has received several awards for his military service, including the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, and Army Commendation Medals.
