DNA Test Reconfirms Killer's Identity in 1981 Murder

(WOOSTER, Ohio) — Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray today joined Wayne County Sheriff Thomas Maurer and Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney Martin Frantz to announce the results of DNA testing recently completed in connection with the 1981 murder of 12 year-old Tina Harmon. Testing performed by Cordray and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI) on evidence submitted by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office has yielded a positive result reconfirming that suspect Robert Buell was responsible for Harmon's rape and murder.

Ohio Supreme Court Grants Review of Major Gun Rights Case

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray won review today of a significant gun rights case from the Ohio Supreme Court. Last year, Cordray asked the Supreme Court to review a series of Cleveland firearms ordinances and licensing requirements that are more restrictive than state and federal law. This morning, the court agreed to hear the case.

“I am pleased that the Ohio Supreme Court accepted our appeal and will clarify the rights of Ohio’s gun owners. The current uncertainty over the legitimacy of these municipal firearms ordinances creates confusion for our local officials, as well as for thousands of gun owners,” said Cordray.

Consumers Have New Option in Battling Aggressive Debt Collection

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray today teamed up with Judge Stephen McIntosh of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas and Columbus Bar Association President Elizabeth Watters to announce a pro bono clinic designed to help Columbus consumers in legal battles with debt collectors.

The pro bono advice clinic, hosted by the Legal Aid Society of Columbus, will provide guidance to consumers who are sued by creditors. Offered on the third Tuesday of every month, the clinic will offer advice and counsel for those trying to navigate the legal system and give consumers the opportunity to meet with an attorney one on one.

Cordray Encouraged by Connecticut’s Lawsuit Against the Rating Agencies

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray said he is encouraged by a lawsuit filed today by Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal against the credit rating agencies Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s. 

Last November, Attorney General Cordray filed suit against these national rating agencies for wreaking havoc on U.S. financial markets by providing unjustified and inflated ratings of mortgage-backed securities in exchange for lucrative fees from securities issuers.

Ohioans to Benefit from Resolution of LifeLock Case

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) -- Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray today joined the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 34 states in announcing an agreement reached with LifeLock Inc., a Tempe, Ariz.-based identity theft protection provider. The agreement resolves an investigation into the company’s misleading advertising practices.

BCI Invites Public Comment During Accreditation Assessment

(LONDON, Ohio) — Local law enforcement agencies and members of the general public will have an opportunity next week to offer their observations about the work of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI). The BCI London facility will welcome a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) for a four-day assessment of BCI’s operations. This assessment will include the availability of a call-in public comment period on Tuesday, March 16. The assessment team will examine all aspects of BCI’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support services.

Consumer Protection Efforts Span State as Complaints Rise

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — A surge of consumer complaints is giving National Consumer Protection Week 2010 (March 7-13) additional importance in Ohio this year. As a result, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray is working with local, state and federal partners to sponsor more consumer protection events to give consumers access to new information and resources to protect themselves.

Crime Lab Partnership Addresses Demand for Drug Testing

(CINCINNATI) — Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray on Friday afternoon visited a local crime lab that has entered into a cooperative agreement with Cordray and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI). The partnership between BCI and the Hamilton County Forensic Laboratory is allowing BCI to address the great demand from local law enforcement agencies across Ohio for controlled substance testing.

Cordray Calls on Ohioans to Work Together to Combat Consumer Fraud

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — At Ohio’s first statewide summit on consumer protection, Attorney General Richard Cordray today called on federal, state and local leaders and consumer interest groups to join forces in battling predatory financial practices and fraud.

The summit, attended by nearly 300 consumer advocates and activists from across the state, focused on promoting fair dealing in the marketplace and protecting consumers in challenging economic times.

Ohio Telemarketing Fraud Victims to Receive $2.8 Million

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Ohio customers of Wachovia Bank whose accounts were illegally debited by a payment processing company between 2004 and 2006 will receive compensation, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray said today. 

More than $2.8 million will be made available as a result of a settlement of a 2007 lawsuit between the Federal Trade Commission and seven states with Florida-based payment processing companies Your Money Access and YMA Company, owned by Tarzenea Dixon. The lawsuit accused Dixon and several co-defendants of knowingly processing unauthorized debits through Wachovia Bank on behalf of deceptive telemarketers and Internet schemes that violated the FTC’s Telemarketing Sales Rule.
