Ohio voters approved a bonus payment to veterans in salute of their service in 2009. Voters approved a similar benefit after World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam.

Notary Service
Applications must be notarized before submission to the Ohio Department of Veterans Services.
County Clerk Locations
Notary service for applications is available at all of Ohio’s 216 county clerk of courts locations in all 88 counties. Some clerk locations may assess a nominal fee. Call in advance for specific details.
Ohio Attorney General’s Office Locations
Free notary service is available at Ohio Attorney General’s office locations around the state.
Taxes
The following letters recognize the veterans bonuses to be the equivalent of non-reportable gifts and therefore do not qualify as taxable income.
The agencies’ letters to the Attorney General can be used as proof of the decision for tax purposes.
RITA provides tax collection services to 183 municipalities in Ohio. Attorney General DeWine encourages non-RITA municipalities to honor the exemption as well.

Benefits
Eligible veterans who served in the Persian Gulf, Iraq or Afghanistan wars may receive $100 for each month of active duty service up to $1,000. Eligible veterans serving on active duty elsewhere in the world during these wars may receive $50 a month up to a maximum of $500. An eligible veteran may combine their service bonuses for a maximum payment of $1,500.
