Millions of consumers use the Internet-based telephone services provided by Vonage, but some have complained about the company’s practices, many here in Ohio. As a result of a settlement completed recently, Ohioans will now be eligible to receive refunds for issues they have had dating back several years.
In a recent segment of “Cordray’s Consumer Solutions” on WSYX-TV in Columbus, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray described the multi-state settlement agreement reached with the telecommunications service provider.
“Prior to the settlement, it had been Vonage’s policy to pay additional incentives to their customer service representatives if those reps could retain customers who called to cancel. The practice itself isn’t an unusual tactic. However, in this scenario it caused consumers confusion and dissatisfaction. Many consumers found it nearly impossible to terminate their service,” Cordray said.
The settlement requires Vonage to give refunds to eligible consumers who have filed complaints dating from January 2004 through March 16, 2010.
Ohioans who feel that they were charged by Vonage for unauthorized services or products, paid for Vonage services after cancellation or did not receive the benefit of any advertised money-back guarantee should file a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General's Office to ensure they receive their refunds.
