E-mails with subject line: “Unauthorized ACH Transaction” are scams

A fraudulent email is making its appearance in Ohio and is accessing consumers’ personal information, not to mention seriously messing with computers.

The phishing virus, takes the form of an e-mail from NACHA—The Electronic Payments Association. The subject line of the e-mail reads: Unauthorized ACH Transaction. The body of the e-mail states that there has been an unauthorized payment transaction on your bank account and directs you to a website.

iPhone users lose hundreds of dollars in iTunes hacking

A Vietnamese-based iPhone app developer hacked the iTunes app store over the fourth of July weekend and swindled hundreds of iPhone users out of hundreds of dollars. The developer, Thuat Nguyen, violated Apple’s developer Program License Agreement, including fraudulent purchase patterns.

Apple released a public statement in which it advised customers to contact their financial institution in the event their credit cards and iTunes passwords were stolen.

Scammers in Springfield pose as district reps

Scammers are walking door-to-door in Springfield, Ohio asking residents for money. Here’s the ploy: they are posing as trusted district representatives hoping to support the Springfield High School Football program.

District officials confirmed they are not soliciting funds for high school athletics or any other program. If you are solicited, refuse the request and contact the Springfield police at (937) 324-7685. If you see suspicious solicitations for donations, report it to us at (800) 282-0515 or www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/Complaint.

Baby boomers: are your parents being scammed?

Although many baby boomers now are caring for their aging parents, they may not realize when their parents fall victim to scams.

According to a recent report by the nonprofit group Investor Protection Trust, about one-fifth of citizens over age 65 already have been victimized financially, whether through an inappropriate investment, unfair fees or outright fraud.

Sham “veterans” group

Since 2003, Ohioans have contributed nearly $1.9 million to the U.S. Navy Veterans Association (USNVA), but mounting evidence indicates that the operation misrepresented its mission.

The organization collected money claiming it would help veterans, but little evidence shows how those contributions actually helped vets or their families.
