Once again, the Ohio Attorney General's Office will be partnering with the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations in hosting an annual conference at the Columbus Renaissance Oct. 26th and 27th.

An update on Sweepstakes Games

Skilled gaming machines or sweepstakes games seem to be multiplying across the state, and can now be found in storefronts, bars, and fraternal clubs.  These operations claim that they are not gambling, but instead are selling phone cards or internet time and provide sweepstakes entries to promote the use of these products.  The real purpose of these sweepstakes is not to promote the sale of a product; rather it is to get people to play the electronic machines, which are often unregulated slot machines.  The operators of these machines answer to no one and often rip off their customers.

More than 10,000 nonprofits lose their exempt status

In June, the IRS announced they revoked the tax exemptions for 275,000 nonprofits or about 18 percent of the country’s tax exempt organizations. Ohio had 10,646 nonprofit  licenses revoked. Of those, 6,381 were 501(c)(3)s.

Seeking justice for the charitable fraud of U.S. veterans

In May, the Ohio Attorney General's Office’s Charitable Law section won a default judgment for $3.7 million, plus attorney fees from the U.S. Navy Veterans Association. Assistant Attorney General Dionne DeNunzio proved the organization had falsely claimed to raise money for U.S. veterans’ causes; in reality, very little money ever went to help veterans. The U.S. Navy Veterans Association is believed to have collected more than $100 million nationwide since its formation in 2001. Several state attorneys general conducted investigations, but Ohio took the lead in prosecution.
