     <description><![CDATA[Skilled gaming machines or sweepstakes games seem to be multiplying  across the state, and can now be found in storefronts, bars, and  fraternal clubs.&nbsp; These operations claim that they are not gambling, but  instead are selling phone cards or internet time and provide  sweepstakes entries to promote the use of these products.&nbsp; The real  purpose of these sweepstakes is not to promote the sale of a product;  rather it is to get people to play the electronic machines, which are  often unregulated slot machines.&nbsp; The operators of these machines answer  to no one and often rip off their customers.]]></description>

     <title><![CDATA[Seeking justice for the charitable fraud of U.S. veterans]]></title>
     <description><![CDATA[In May, the Ohio Attorney General's Office&rsquo;s Charitable Law section won a  default judgment for $3.7 million, plus attorney fees from the U.S.  Navy Veterans Association. Assistant Attorney General Dionne DeNunzio  proved the organization had falsely claimed to raise money for U.S.  veterans&rsquo; causes; in reality, very little money ever went to help  veterans. The U.S. Navy Veterans Association is believed to have  collected more than $100 million nationwide since its formation in 2001.  Several state attorneys general conducted investigations, but Ohio took  the lead in prosecution.]]></description>

     <description><![CDATA[Many charities saw an average increase in donations of 2.1 percent in  2010 when adjusted for inflation, according to Giving USA report, which  was released by the Giving USA Foundation in June 2011.&nbsp; The increase  marks the end of our nation&rsquo;s first ever back-to-back years for  decreases in charitable giving (2008 and 2009) since tracking began in  1954.]]></description>

But leaders of 501(c)(3) organizations need to remember that there are restrictions on what types of activities in the political realm groups can participate in. The most obvious restriction prohibits the use of charitable funds for contributions to candidates&rsquo; campaigns.      <description><![CDATA[The Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations and the Ohio Attorney General&rsquo;s Office are co-sponsoring an annual conference Sept. 6&ndash;7 that will bring together hundreds of representatives from charities throughout the state.<br />

The conference, to be held at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Columbus, will feature numerous workshops and presentations on issues of importance to the charitable sector. Breakout sessions will address such topics as charitable registration, gaming, charitable fraud, resource development, and social enterprise. Special sessions will cover creativity and collaboration, and a reception will give attendees a chance to network.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Maria Cornelius will present highlights from the CompassPoint study of more than 3,000 nonprofit executives nationwide. Cornelius, one author of the Daring to Lead 2011 report, will talk about the findings&rsquo; implications.<br />
