Most of you are aware the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) has been regularly revising the Peace Officer Basic Training Curriculum over the past 18 months. Recently, the Private Security Training curriculum has been added to the list of revisions and the Humane Agent and Corrections Basic programs are being looked at for January 2013. We are utilizing Subject Matter Expert (SME) groups to provide the content for these topic revisions and we’re reaching out to professionals in the field for curriculum content, performance objectives, acceptable performance levels, if applicable, and technical language.
As agency administrators and/or academy commanders, we would like for you to think about individuals in the profession that you feel would be an asset to the development of our basic curriculum. Please forward this email and the attached SME applications to these individuals so they can decide if they would like to be considered as an SME for a specific topic. The SME applications identify the basic program in the file name. Peace Officer Basic and Peace Officer Refresher programs are identified as BAS, Corrections Basic Training as CBT, and Private Security is identified as PSA.
Once an individual has submitted an application, they will be contacted, if selected, when the specific lesson plan they have been chosen for is up for revision. For those individuals selected, the volunteering of their time will be appreciated and respected. During the time the SME group is working on revisions, we know that the additional responsibilities will task already demanding schedules. We will be committed to making meeting times and locations as convenient as possible. We will also be offering these individuals the opportunity to make an immediate and lasting impact on law enforcement training. Better training directly correlates to better service, which fosters public support and creates safer communities.
The OPOTC is committed to the delivery of modern basic training programs that connect the lessons of the past to a vision for the future. If you, or someone you know, are interested in taking part in the basic curriculum revision process, please submit an SME application. If you have any specific questions, please to not hesitate to contact the Education & Policy section at, OPOTCEducationandPolicy@ohioattorneygeneral.gov, or call 740-845-2700.
