Education and Policy

The Education and Policy Section is comprised of Commission staff that supports the agency mission through basic curriculum development and student evaluation, grant administration and management, legislative tracking, and outreach initiatives.

One responsibility of the section is to develop curriculum in the Commission programs as required by the Ohio Revised Code and Ohio Administrative Code. These programs include peace officer basic and refresher, corrections, jailer, bailiff, probation, parole, humane agent, and private security. The development and administration of the State Certification Exams in each of the training programs also lies within this section. Furthermore, tracking of legislative issues that may impact training content and standards is performed by and disseminated from the Education and Policy Section.

Additional responsibilities include the administration of the Attorney General’s Drug Use Prevention Grant which recently saw to the awarding of nearly $3.4 million for the year. This funding allowed 351 officers to provide drug use prevention programming in 1,669 Ohio public schools. Likewise, the section’s grant manager is responsible for the supervision of $100,000 in funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Ohio Traffic Safety Office. These funds allow Ohio law enforcement officers to take advanced training courses in Alcohol Detection Apprehension, and Prosecution (ADAP), Advanced ADAP, ADAP Instructor, Traffic Crash Investigations I and II, Crash Investigation Techniques, Driving Impaired Criminal Enforcement, Electronic Speed Measuring Device (ESMD) RADAR and LIDAR, ESMD Instructor, and the Operating a Vehicle Intoxicated (OVI) Seminar free of charge. Moreover, constituent inquiries, tours of the Academy, formation of publications, and special projects such as the coordination of the Annual Law Enforcement Conference rest within the section.
