Combat Veteran Issues - Awareness and Response Training

This course will provide awareness of issues confronting distressed combat veterans, to include post traumatic distress syndrome and traumatic brain injury, and best de-escalation practices when encountering these individuals. Speakers include professionals from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and Ohio Combat Veterans. 

OPOTA certificates will be provided to all those who pre-register at the conclusion of the training session.

Crime Victims' Rights and Responsibilities

This course provides information on the rights and responsibilities of crime victims and law enforcement respectively, typical victim reactions, the VINE victim notification system and other information that law enforcement personnel can use to encourage victims to become effective partners in the law enforcement and criminal justice system.

Dealing with the Suicidal

This one-day course covers effective ways of handling suicide victims and families, definitions of suicide, historical perspectives,philosophical aspects, misconceptions, the officer’s response to death and the victim, intervention in suicide attempts, the phenomenon of suicide, why people choose to end their lives, suicide of the elderly, juvenile suicide, and recent trends known as “suicide-by-cop”.

Death Notification

This one day program provides information and guidance to officers who must inform family members and/or friends of the death of a loved one. Topics include strategies for staying emotionally healthy as a crisis professional, coping techniques, "how-to-help" techniques, survivor issues, communication techniques, victim distress, and human behavior. This course also provides the student with resources such as crime victim services and other social services.

Human Relations and Conflict Management

This two-day course is for the patrol officers who have regular contact with citizens in crisis situations. The course fulfills a twopart mission: Patrol officers learn to identify and handle personal conflict and they learn how to reduce conflict with citizens in daily encounters. Other topics include a study of values, morals and a wide range of tools officers can use to manage conflict.

Human Trafficking: Basic Overview

This five-hour class presents a basic overview of the crime(s) of Human Trafficking.  The course looks at the issue on a global, national, and state-wide scale.  Topics include Federal and State laws, victim indicators, trafficking indicators, and location indicators.

Interacting with the Special Needs Population

This one-day course is a refresher for veteran law enforcement officers who typically handle calls involving special needs persons. The course will cover topics to include recognizing observable characteristics of individuals in crisis, and basic de-escalation techniques to respond to these situations.

Law Enforcement Ethics: What's the Big Deal?

The purpose of this 3 hour advanced workshop is to present the ethical aspects of being a public servant. Training on ethics in any profession is more important today than it ever has been. The ethics, or lack thereof, you bring to your job is one of the prime determinants of hos successful you will be in the public workplace. The attitudes of public servants toward their job and individuals with whom they work play a crucial role in the process of creating professional standards for the members of the occupation.
