BCI Investigation Division

Criminal cases can be won and lost at the scene of the crime, so the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation’s professional investigators can assist local jurisdictions every day anywhere in the state. Services include securing and analyzing evidence, following leads, assisting with legal issues and providing other support to ensure thorough criminal investigations. The Investigations Division consists of the following units:

• The Crime Scene Unit processes felony crime scenes to obtain physical evidence and provide expert courtroom testimony.
  
• The Criminal Intelligence Unit collects, processes, analyzes and disseminates information about organized crime, major crimes, financial crimes, criminal gangs, homeland security and organized drug trafficking.
  
• The Computer Crimes Unit helps local officials deal with increasingly complex technical and legal issues in their computer crimes investigations and prosecutions.
  
• The Environmental Enforcement Unit assists local law enforcement and other state and federal agencies in investigating criminal environmental activity. Such activity includes hazardous, solid and infectious waste as well as water and air pollution.
  
• The Narcotics Unit combats illicit drug activity in Ohio through the latest technological advances, such as thermal imagery, body wires and vehicle tracking devices. It assists other law enforcement agencies with cases varying from street-level drug traffickers and marijuana-growing operations to complex, multi-jurisdictional conspiracy investigations.
  
• The Clandestine Drug Lab and Marijuana Eradication Unit works to dismantle clandestine drug production across the state. Agents drive lab response vehicles that contain valuable tools to help them shut down dangerous drug production sites, such as Methamphetamine labs. Additionally, the unit works to vigorously suppress and eradicate marijuana plants that are cultivated throughout the state. Free trainings, customized to fit any group, are available through this unit.
  
• The Special Investigations Unit conducts investigations that fall outside of BCI's other investigative units. Typical requests from law enforcement agencies include serial crimes, unsolved homicides, fugitive apprehension, police-involved shootings, public corruption investigations and dignitary protection.
