(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – An Illinois-based company defrauded Ohioans out of thousands of dollars and Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray is seeking restitution and civil penalties in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.
Cordray said that the company and its owners, Derek C. Lurie and Steven Lurie, claimed that they would provide “escrow” services for their customers to pay property taxes or homeowner insurance but collected the money from consumers and never made the payments on their behalf.

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — At the request of Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray, courts in Hamilton and Fairfield counties have granted temporary restraining orders against the U.S. Navy Veterans Association (USNVA). The orders prohibit USNVA from soliciting contributions in Ohio or removing any of the contents of two UPS mailboxes used by the organization as collection points for contributions.

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray has informed the Ohio Elections Commission that he is “concerned that the large volume of unpaid fines owed to the commission stems largely from time lags in both the assessment of fines and the certification of debts from those fines to the Attorney General’s Office.”

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Based on his longstanding support for Second Amendment rights, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray applauded today’s ruling in the United States Supreme Court that government cannot unduly restrict these rights. Cordray co-sponsored an amicus brief in the case of McDonald v. City of Chicago, decided this morning, in which the court held that the Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms from federal, state and local government interference. In its decision, the court cited the brief from Cordray and other state attorneys general, pointing out, "the right to keep and bear arms is fundamental."

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Homeowners should lookout for groups of traveling scam artists offering roof repair, driveway paving and sealing, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray warned today.
“Known by law enforcement as ‘travelers,’ these professional thieves make their way through Ohio and other northern states in the summer months,” Cordray said. “They offer to pave driveways or repair roofs for a very low price, but they intentionally deceive homeowners and do extremely shoddy work.”

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray is seeking emergency court orders to prevent Ohioans’ contributions from being collected by a Florida-based “veterans” charity being investigated by several states. He also noted troubling revelations that the man who appears to have orchestrated this sham charity made hundreds of thousands of dollars in political contributions to candidates throughout the United States and in Ohio.

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray today applauded a United States Supreme Court decision holding that ballot petition signatures are generally a matter of public record, and their disclosure does not violate the First Amendment. Cordray had taken the lead in filing a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of 23 states urging today’s outcome.

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – As Ohio senior citizens this week begin to receive $250 Medicare rebate checks in the mail from the federal government, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray is warning seniors to watch out for accompanying scams.
“The release of these checks, while clearly a very good thing, unfortunately will also bring about an onslaught of scams targeting older Ohioans,” said Cordray. “We know that some seniors may not be expecting the check or may not fully understand that the checks come with no strings attached. Unfortunately, we also expect that some pretty sophisticated con artists will be looking to capitalize on that element of surprise and confusion. Our best line of defense is to generate awareness.”

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray has been honored by the Central Ohio Rescue and Restore Coalition with its first-ever “Promoter of Justice Award” for his ongoing efforts in combating the scourge of human trafficking in Ohio. The award, which was presented at the coalition’s “Unlocking the Chains” conference on June 18, recognized Cordray as “Ohio’s abolitionist leader for 2010.”

(AKRON, Ohio) — Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI) join the Akron Police Department in announcing the arrest of a suspect in the May 28 murder of an elderly Akron woman. This morning, 38 year-old Devon Daire Owens of Warren was taken into custody and charged with aggravated murder, aggravated burglary and rape in the death of 73 year-old Clara Virginia Wilfong.
