Cordray Announces Multistate Settlement with TJX Companies Over Security Data Breach

Attorney General Richard Cordray today announced a multistate settlement with TJX Companies, Inc. (T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods stores) over a massive data breach that placed thousands of consumers' personal data at risk nationwide. Through the agreement, the company will pay $9.75 million to the states, including $386,000 for consumer protection efforts in Ohio.

Cordray Issues Statewide Foreclosure Rescue Scam Sweep

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray today filed three lawsuits in a continuing effort to rid the state of foreclosure rescue scams operations. The lawsuits, filed against 21st Century Legal Services (Franklin County), Foreclosure Home Assistance, LLC (Cuyahoga County), and Michael Brotherton, who does business as Financial Emergency, Inc. (Greene County) seek to shut down the companies’ ongoing operations in Ohio.

Cordray Files Objections in GM Bankruptcy

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray announced that his office today filed four objections to the pending General Motors sale in United States Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York. The objections were filed on behalf of the State of Ohio and Ohio consumers and dealerships.

Attorney General Secures Indictment of Ironton Man Accused of Aggravated Murder

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray today announced that Thomas L. Wilcox, 38, of Ironton was named in an eight-count indictment in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court on charges of aggravated arson, aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, child endangering and domestic violence. If convicted of aggravated murder, Wilcox may face the death penalty.

Columbus Home Improvement Company Sued for Fraud

A Columbus home improvement company did shoddy work and failed to deliver promised services or honor warranties, according to a lawsuit filed today by Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray. The suit, filed in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, charges Premier Design (Premier) and its owner, Jeffrey Shalayda, with multiple violations of Ohio consumer law.

Cordray Joins Seven Attorneys General in Letter to President Obama

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray joined Attorneys General from California, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts and North Carolina yesterday in a letter to President Obama asking that he preserve their state consumer protection enforcement authority while leading financial regulatory reform.

New Law Enforcement Partnership Provides Continued Service With Cost Savings

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray and the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI&I) announced today a new partnership with the office of Guernsey County Sheriff Michael McCauley to provide evidence collection, testing and other BCI&I services to southeast Ohio sheriffs and police agencies at a reduced cost to the state.

Cordray Awards $2.2 Million to Law Enforcement Agencies

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray today announced that dozens of drug use prevention programs for kids and teens will go on across Ohio this summer and beyond thanks to special grants. Eighty Ohio law enforcement agencies will share $2.2 million in Special Drug Use Prevention Grant money. The money will help pay the salaries of Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) officers, school resource officers and others who perform drug use prevention work.
